What does a TAFE trade teacher do?
As a TAFE trade teacher you will deliver training and assess students in your area of trade expertise. This involves encouraging and mentoring students, helping them to succeed in their chosen trade area. In training and assessing students, you will have the opportunity to teach in a variety of locations such as classrooms, workshops and in the field, using different training tools and techniques. Your role may see you contribute to developing trade training in consultation with industry. Further information is available in the position description.
What experience/qualifications are required to become a TAFE teacher?
All you need to become a TAFE teacher is:
- five years post-trade training industrial experience, or
- nine years full-time industrial experience, and/or
- teaching experience and your trade qualification or equivalent, and/or
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
An assessment of your experience will be undertaken to determine your eligibility for a teaching position.

How do I transition from a tradesperson to a teacher?
The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is a mandatory requirement of TAFE teaching and provides the knowledge and practical skills required for planning, preparing and delivering training and assessment to small and large groups.
What will I be paid?
Salary is payable as per the TAFE Teachers Award - State 2003. In addition, 12.75 per cent in superannuation contributions and annual leave loading are paid.
If appointed and you have teaching qualifications beyond Certificate IV Training and Assessment, you may be eligible to commence on a higher salary level. An assessment of your qualification and experience will be undertaken to determine the appropriate salary level. Annual increments may apply to your salary and you will receive additional pay increases under enterprise bargaining agreements.
